درباره‌ی ماستودون

ماستدون (از باستان یونانی μαστός (mastós) "br East" و ὀδούς (odoús) "tooth") یکی از اعضای Mammut (آلمان برای "mammoth") است که به آمریکای شمالی ختم شد و از اواخر Miocene به Holocene زندگی می کرد. Mastodons متعلق به سفارش Proboscidea، همان سفارش به عنوان فیل و ماموت (که متعلق به خانواده فیلidae). Mammut نوع خانواده منقرض شده Mammutidae است که از اجداد فیل های مدرن حداقل 28 میلیون سال پیش در طول Oligocene جدا شده است. مانند دیگر اعضای Mammutidae، دندان های مولار از مورفولوژی zygodont دارند (جایی که جفت های موازی تیکپس به صخره های تیز ادغام می شوند)، که به شدت با کسانی از فیل ها متفاوت است.
